ASTRO TURF AT SPORTS FIELDS

What is it?
To put it simply:
This project was introduced during a 2025 City Council meeting as a way to expand opportunities for youth sports. Installing AstroTurf on these fields would allow for increased playtime, as games and practices are often canceled when natural grass fields are too wet to use.
In addition to improving field availability, turf fields are expected to make these facilities more attractive for hosting tournaments, bringing more teams, families, and visitors to our community.
What will it look like on my ballot?
QUESTION 7:
FOR or AGAINST an issue of bonds of the City of Maumelle, Arkansas in the maximum principal amount of $5,100,000 which, together with other available moneys, for the purposes of financing all or a portion of the costs of the design, engineering, construction, acquisition, equipping, and installation of artificial turf on a portion of the City’s athletic fields for baseball, softball and soccer and related drainage improvements, and to pay the costs of issuing the bonds, and, in order to pay the bonds, the levy and pledge of a one-half of one percent (0.50%) local sales and use tax within the City.
What does this mean?
Important Reminder- Ballot question 1 regarding refunding is the most crucial item on the ballot. If the refunding question is NOT approved, then none of the projects will be able to proceed. Even if the individual ballot question is approved by voters, it cannot be funded, and will not advance.
This project was introduced in an effort to expand youth sports opportunities by installing AstroTurf, which allows games and practices to continue even after wet weather. Turf fields would also help attract tournaments, bringing more visitors and economic activity to the community.
